3 Tips for Small Business Owners during Covid-19

The impact of Covid-19 has created severe challenges for all businesses – the smaller the business, the harder the hit. I have worked in business and with businesses (big and small) for almost 20 years and I have witnessed many ups and downs. The last recession hit hard and valuable lessons were learned. In these times, businesses are once again having to adapt to a rapidly changing environment. For many it has been a time for reflection, adjusting business and communication plans and adapting to a society shaped by Covid-19 restrictions.

Here are three tips for small business owners:

1. Listen and communicate with clients, colleagues and industry

Keep in touch with your clients, customers and industry and offer support where you can. Listen to your customers and provide solutions or referrals, where possible. Reach out to your industry colleagues to check in and provide support, to share experiences and to offer encouragement. While you may not be able to help now, there will be opportunities in the future. Tap in to industry supports and webinar events and keep learning. It is important to maintain communications during these times, to keep your clients and colleagues updated so that when things get moving again, you are top of mind and vice versa.

2. Grow your online presence

The closure of businesses as a result of Covid-19 restrictions has forced hundreds of business owners to move their offerings online, and many for the first time. Selling direct to consumers online is now key for many to remain viable. More businesses are communicating via social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter to reach their audiences during lockdown to tell their story and to promote their offerings now available online. Social media marketing helps you to increase brand and product exposure, and cultivate relationships with consumers.

For businesses new to online selling and seeking to invest in their online presence, there are a number of free training options available during these times. For example, Facebook is running free weekly training events online and the Digital Marketing Institute is offering free training courses in the use of digital marketing channels through its Power Membership programme. 3. Know what financial supports are available

The Irish Government has put in place a number of supports that are available for business owners to help them and their employees during the Covid-19 pandemic and banks are offering flexibility to their customers. On 2nd May the government announced additional support for businesses and published a roadmap for reopening society and business. You can find out more information about supports available via Citizens Information

For businesses looking to upgrade their website and ecommerce system, a Trading Online Voucher Scheme  is available through Local Enterprise Offices to help small and microenterprises get online. The voucher is worth up to €2,500. The LEO is also offering advisory support and free online training and mentoring services to business owners. See full list of their supports here.

Skillnet Ireland and its 70 Skillnet Networks are providing supports to businesses in addressing these challenges across the economy. Check out more here.

Keep an eye out for initiatives and funding opportunities through your local councils and industry representative bodies. The Chamber Ireland website also lists resources for businesses here.
